A Study on 1 John 1:9
A Simpler Path Than the Old System
Under the Old Testament system, the pathway to the forgiveness of sins was long and laborious — sacrifices, rituals, priestly intercession. But in the New Testament covenant, John points us to something beautifully simple. The only thing that stands to be tested is the faithfulness and the truth of God Himself.
And John says, in effect: you need not worry. God is faithful. God is just. What God says — not tied to any external system, not dependent on any human effort — can be trusted completely.
What It Means That God Is Faithful and Just
Two things flow from these attributes of God:
First, when God makes a promise, you can be absolutely certain that promise will happen exactly as He said it would.
Second, God in His providence actively ensures that His word does not fall to the ground. He does not merely make promises and step back. He works fully and completely to the end that His commitments are kept.
It is on this foundation that John calls us to confess our sins.
Why Confession Leads to Certain Forgiveness
When we confess our sins, are we forgiven because of the eloquence of our words? Because of the vocabulary we use? Because we are in ourselves good people who cannot be denied?
No. John's answer is plain and simple: because God is faithful and God is just.
When the one who walks in the light comes to the Lord in confession, they are one hundred percent certain that the blood of Jesus — shed for their atonement — will come into full effect. Their sins will be forgiven. They will be cleansed from all unrighteousness. Not because of who they are, but entirely because of who God is.
John does not apply these attributes of God's faithfulness and justice to any other matter here. He applies them directly, specifically, and personally to the forgiveness of our sins.
Put the Burden Down
There is no need to carry the weight of sin around. There is no need to run from God because you feel you have done something wrong. There is no need to wallow in grief and guilt as though forgiveness is out of reach.
Whenever we come to God in genuine brokenness — heartbroken, truly repentant, confessing our sins — Scripture gives us this assurance: God will forgive us. Not perhaps. Not maybe. With certainty. Because of who He is.
Never forget that.
